#6 - Global Trends

 Global Trends

Global Trends is a topic that can span across all types of media, but all trends have one thing in common, they made an impact in some way whether that be short term or long term. One form of media that I believe everyone can enjoy is music. Music is a form of media that has stood the test of time, being a highly talked about talking for hundreds of years, and having a few weeks passed since the 2026 Grammys, this is a perfect opportunity to talk about the trending topics in music, and the top songs in 2026.

The 2026 Grammys took place February 1st in Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the night was filled with many highs, lows, and viral moments. Coming out of the ceremony, one group walked away with no awards, but walked away with the most views online via YouTube, that being international girl group, Katseye. After the group gained popularity over the past year with their hit song, Gabriela, the group was nominated for Best New Artist, alongside many other talented artists. However at the Grammys, the group chose a different song from their catalogue. In the now infamous performance, the group took to the Grammy stage to perform their song “Gnarly” sending viewers at home into a frenzy of opinions and praises. While some enjoyed the performances, others questioned if they had a place at the ceremony at all. The video of Katseye’s performance has gained over 4 million views on YouTube which far surpasses any other performance video from the 2026 ceremony on the official Grammy YouTube channel.

Many other viral and feel good moments came out of the 2026 Grammys, the winner of the Best New Artist award went to Olivia Dean, who has gained popularity with multiple hit songs including “So Easy to Fall in Love” and “Man I Need” which she performed at the ceremony. Staying on the topics of Best New Artists, Alex Warren also garnered attention after his performance, where his ear piece malfunctioned causing his performance to be tampered with, to which viewers took to social media to blame the academy. Other notable wins from the ceremony included Bad Bunny winning Album of the year for his album Debi Tirar Mas, just in time for the SuperBowl Halftime Show a few weeks later. Other awards also included Kendrick Lamar winning Record of The Year for song Luther, and Billie Eilish taking home the award for Song of The Year for her song Wildflower

The Grammys are an annual ceremony that draws a lot of eyes every year from music fans and longtime viewers, but they don’t speak for what happens in all of music. Today, to look at the top songs of the times, there are many ways to find out what people are listening to. At the time of writing this, the BillBoard Top 100 has a good variety in music just in its top 5. The top 5 include hits like “Golden” from the Netflix blockbuster, K-Pop Demon Hunters which became the #1 movie and #1 song in the world, it currently sits at number 5 on the Billboard charts. The rest of the top 5 is made of songs that have earned their place in the charts, including “Ordinary” by Alex Warren and “I Just Might” by Bruno Mars. The number 2 spot is taken by the song “Man I Need” by Olivia Dean fresh off a Best New Artist win, with the number 1 spot being taken by the hit country song “Choosin’ Texas” by Ella Langley, which has spent 22 weeks on the Billboard.

When talking about global trends, specifically in music it is clear that shows like the Grammys will always have an audience to due to impact of music in our culture. There will always be a top 5 or an award to give out to a new album, and there will always be an audience for highly regarded music. This shows the impact of music and what people are listening too, and why it will always be apart of global trends.
